This is your last daily challenge! Bring them ALL to me after the break for a prize!
For this challenge, I want you to read all the star words you are working on right now. (These should be the words in your "Words to Practice" bag.) Pick the 5 or 6 (not more than that) words that are giving you the most difficulty and write them on a piece of paper with today's date. Read the words 3 times after you write them.
Now let's say that you have been practicing your star words SO MUCH over break that you don't have any words in your practice bag! You know them all! First of all, give me a pretend high 5 (Nice!) and write down 5 words that you had a hard time reading over the break. Maybe you were reading a new book and had a hard time with some of the new words in it. Well write those down instead!
Great job keeping your brain in shape with those daily challenges! I expect to see you on Monday rested up and ready to go! We have A LOT to learn! I hope you haven't missed me too much... I've missed you! See you Monday and remember to greet me when you come in the door! Have a great end to your break!

Daily Challenge 7
12-30-09
Today's daily challenge is to write a journal entry about what you've been doing over the break! Write today's date on the top of the page then start your paragraph. Remember to include a two-finger space at the beginning, use to use capital letters and periods in the right places. The top challenge is 6 or 7 sentences! Can you do it? (I know you can!)
One more daily challenge to go and you are finished!!!

Daily Challenge 6
12-29-09
Here is daily challenge 6! Only two more to go after this one! Here is your job today. Read the paragraph below. You can have an adult help you, but most of you should be able to read it alone, so try that first! Then answer the questions under the paragraph. You do not need to write the answers in complete sentences, but do try to answer the questions without looking back at the paragraph. This is to see how well you understand something you have read or heard. An adult may need to help you read the questions. Write your answers on a piece of paper and bring it to me with the other daily challenges after break!
Winter
Winter is cold. I need to find my coat. Where are my boots? I need to have a warm hat and gloves. Has anyone seen my scarf? I can't wait to get outside! The snowflakes are so big and white! I wonder if I can find my sled. Where will we go sledding? Later, Mom will make hot chocolate. We will sit by the fire and warm up. I will fall asleep and be cozy in my bed.
1. What is happening outside this child's house?
2. Which words in the story give you clues about the weather?
3. How did the child describe the snowflakes?
4. What will the child do today?
5. What do you do in the winter?
Have a great day!!

Daily Challenge 4
12-24-09
Here is your next daily challenge! After break, we will continue learning about maps and landforms as we study Earth. Many of you did not know what a landform was when I asked, so here you go! Write today's date on a piece of paper (or continue with the same paper you are putting all the daily challenges on)... Now write the word landform. Now find out the definition of a landform and write that down. (Yes, it is okay to ask an adult to help.) Remember, a definition tells what the word means. Next, see if you can think of some types of landforms now that you know what a landform is. (Try to think of one on your own before asking for help.)
Example
12-24-09
landform-(definition)
1. example 1
2. example 2 etc., etc.
You are halfway done with the challenges! I hope you are having a lot of fun on break so far!
Parents, here is a good website for some extra reading practice during break:

Merry Christmas! Look for more posts next Monday!

Daily Challenge 3
12-23-09
Good morning! Here is the third daily challenge.
First graders, pretend we are doing calendar and have gotten to the part where I say, "Today we will be doing number models for 10." That's what you will be doing for today's challenge. You will be writing down the number models instead of me! Write down as many as you can using addition or subtraction. You should be able to write down 15 or 20! Remember your doubles facts and turn-around facts! Put the date on the paper and start writing! I am putting an example below since I tried to post a video, but it is not working! I will try it again later.
Example
12-23-09
Number models that equal 10
10+0
0+10
9+1
1+9
10-0
etc., etc.
Have a great day!
